When we feel we've got unfinished business in life, we can feel disheartened. Everybody has certain goals, but more people have regrets. 92% of people say that the goals they set for themselves never get achieved. This is a worryingly high statistic. And therefore, it's unsurprising that conditions like depression loom large. But when you look at the 8% who have achieved their goals, what is the key? It's about mindset and giving it a shake-up. How can you change yours?

Identify Your “Counter Mindset”

We have to remember that our mindsets are formed through previous experiences and emotional milestones in life. The mindsets that aren't getting the results you want are termed “counter mindsets.” And these can consist of negative thoughts, self-doubt, and any limiting beliefs. And while you know that these mindsets are not productive and that you have to become a positive person, it's easy to become a positive person in some ways, but in other ways, it requires a lot more effort. You've got to examine what they call “automatic negative thoughts.” Firstly, you have to pay attention to them and look at the frequency in which they occur. Once you start to recognize how many negative thoughts you have throughout the course of a day, this could be the opportunity to flip the switch.

Changing Your Mindset

When you identify your negative thoughts, you need to look at the main ones that are holding you back. And then, you can start to change the negative to positive. So if you look in the mirror and think you look ugly, one simple way to offset this would be to say that you look good. There are other ways you can change your mindset, such as understanding why you think certain thoughts about yourself. But in addition, you will have to remember that when it comes to changing your mindset, it's not just about using the tools, but it's about persistence. When you start to change your mindset, you've got to gradually build up. Treat your mind like it is a muscle. And the big mistake many of us make in life is that we have to go all-in or give up. But when we are training our muscles, we have to stimulate an adaptive response. The same thing applies to your mind. When you start to look at the small goals and achieve them, you can gradually turn the dial up.

Failure Happens to Us All!

People are so scared to fail that we give up as soon as we hit a brick wall. But when you start to look at the 8% that achieve success in life, however, they define the term “success,” they are prepared for failure. But what they do when they hit failure, is look at the reasons behind hitting the wall, and making the relevant adjustments to start again. Giving yourself permission to fail is crucial because this takes the pressure off being “perfect.”

Changing your mindset is a choice. And when you decide that you are going to flip your focus, it will be the best thing that will never happen to you.
