Embracing the Idea of Dying Empty

In his book, Die Empty, Todd Henry encourages people to reach for the creativity inside them and release it to inspire others and benefit the world, rather than taking their best work with them to the grave.

I was fascinated by many ideas in the book as I felt I had been already implementing some of them. Intriguingly, for many “ordinary” people, the persistence to work, learn, teach, perform different activities, challenge difficulties, get out of their comfort zone, share experiences with others, and narrate personal stories does not stem from a drive to merely talk or preach. These people intend to benefit others, support them, bring joy to them, or make a positive difference in their lives. Similarly, just as you like hearing about the personal experiences of others to be inspired, perhaps there are people who will benefit from your experiences and thoughts.

On the other hand, there are people that you meet time and again and realize that you got nothing out of them. You did not learn or benefit from their company, nor did they add any value to your acquaintance. They are very reserved with their words and avoid sharing any knowledge or experience.

The first reason that people may keep their talents, or words to themselves is that they do not feel like they have anything of value to share. In that respect, I say you never know! Sometimes, you tell a simple story or share a line you read and that makes an impact on others.

The second reason is that they do not want others to know the details of their lives. Well, if that’s the case, you do not have to share the minuscule details; besides, if your circle of contacts cares about you, they will want to know what makes you happy or miserable to show appreciation or compassion. The worst reason to not share is because they think that others would be envious for what they have, know, or do!

Additionally, some people choose not to share because they are unable to transfer the experience to another dimension beyond expression—a gift that not everyone has. You see, most people get to watch the sunrise and witness the beauty of nature, but only a few can convey that experience and release deep manifestations to sway our hearts and minds. Many people take a lesson from every event they experience. They pause to contemplate from a close and deep perspective or take a picture of the memory, to look at the event from afar and assess with objectivity. Some things appear more explicit from a distance, and some challenges are objectively understood when we separate them from feelings and prejudice.

Truly, I value and admire all the wonderful influencers who share their experiences, skills, advice, and ideas with others, whether through their paid work or by volunteering their time and effort.

Do not keep any hidden wishes, ideas, gems, or talents buried inside you; unleash those powerful inspirations and share them so the world can be richer. As a Muslim, I believe that when we die, we leave the knowledge, wisdom, and experiences as well as the good times and things we shared with others; and that is the record of good deeds we take with us to the grave.

Die empty but die plentiful!!
