How to Stick to Your New Year's Resolution in a World of Distractions

It’s already the second month of 2022, which follows plenty of questions such as whether or not you’re gotten the right foot off into the new year. If you’re one of the many that have created a new years resolution, were you able to follow it so far this year?  You know you need to stay accountable for your goals, but how can you do that in a world of distractions?

The main reason why you struggle with your resolution

The new year brings with it a lot of optimism and hope. You make a resolution to do something that you've never done before. You may even create a new goal for yourself. However, it doesn't take too long before you start to feel like the change is too difficult and you give up.

This happens because we often underestimate how hard it is to change our habits. We try to do too much at once and we don't give ourselves enough time or support to complete the task at hand. This can be especially true when we're trying to lose weight or get healthier, but it applies to any type of goal that we may have set for ourselves.

Put it into planning

If you’re consistently adding this resolution to your daily schedule, it’s going to become easier to create long-lasting habits. It’s best to first begin by making a detailed plan. This includes writing out what the stages are to create success but it should also include some of the possible challenges that you may face. For instance, if you’re wanting to become healthier then you may want to list out the steps that could help you such as searching for medical marijuana, changing your diet, and even taking a look at your physical activity.

Understand that change is a slow process

As ideal as it would be to just immediately be a success at what you’re doing, it simply doesn’t work that way.  Slow and steady wins the race and this can even be said about New Years Resolutions. It’s important to be patient with yourself and understand that the more incorporated this goal is within your day-to-day life, the more likely you’re going to be less distracted with obstacles that come your way.

Try to keep a journal

Usually by March people completely lose their motivation of whatever the resolution was. It’s very important to keep yourself motivated and one of the greatest ways to do this would be to keep a journal. This journal can record how far you’ve gotten, what your setbacks were, how you overcome those, and so much more. So it’s best to write down your goal and how the progress is as this is going to be a soft nudge that can help you with staying motivated.
