From rumours of World War Three to Covid-19, for many people, 2020 is “cancelled”. However, while others choose to look back and reminisce about ‘Hot Girl Summer’, here’s your chance to become your own #girlboss.

Instead of seeing the current pandemic as a giant mountain, why not use it to create your business’s identity? Famous companies such as Disney, Microsoft and Apple all had to overcome troublesome situations to get to where they are now and their hurdles are what define them today. It is imperative that you realise that challenging times lead to sweeter victory songs and successes.

Even if you are not aiming to become the next Oprah, don’t allow Covid-19 to discourage you from starting your side hustle. With current technology, shopping has never been so straightforward. In just a few clicks, you can easily fill a wardrobe or furnish a whole house. Many people are still at home browsing their feeds and there is still time to reach their screens. You can also implement an employee vaccine requirement to help get your business up and running.

So, the time of looking through your Instagram archives is officially over, sit up and start grinding because we’re living in an age of online shopping and social media. Why not take advantage of the free tools around you? What more could you want?

Whether you like it or not and for better or for worse, the future is digital! We are living in the most advanced and smart age so far. There are many ways you can use this to your advantage.

Firstly, we can easily learn from other young successful business icons. Take Kylie Jenner for example. Instead of advertising on TV, she posts her new cosmetic releases on her social media platforms, where she knows they’ll grab more attention. With the number of people watching traditional TV dying, you too may want to consider sticking to platforms like Instagram.

Secondly, pay attention to the fact that being at home has increased everyone’s screen time. Therefore, your business is more likely to be explored and talked about. With social distancing rules in place, everyone (from old to young) is trying desperately to find alternative ways to keep connected with friends and family, even if that means getting lost in an Instagram and TikTok whirlwind. By understanding your demographic, investing in aesthetic and eye-catching designs and putting in a few hashtags to let the platform’s algorithm do its magic, you’re more likely to gain an interested audience. Icons like Jenner don’t only teach us where to advertise, but they also show us how. Don’t be afraid to pay more attention to the theme of your feed because it will go a long way.

This pandemic has really opened up so many opportunities for beginner online businesses. It’s a real shame that not many capable CEOs are looking at 2020 with their glass half full. When is the next time you will have this much free time? This much liberty? Only smart and optimistic thinkers will come out of this year with new, great achievements. Be consistent and passionate about your work and share it with the world confidently.
