Getting Into Sports This Summer

As the sun starts to creep out and the weather begins to improve, it’s becoming increasingly evident that summer has arrived. But what are you going to do to occupy your time at this pleasant time of year? The coronavirus and Covid-19 pandemic saw many of our plans last summer cancelled and, unfortunately, around the world, many restrictions are still in place to slow the spread of the virus and save lives. Of course, this is important, but you may be feeling limited in what you can and can’t do. One area you can get involved in that you might enjoy is sports. Whether you’re already involved in sports or whether you haven’t really tried any sports out as an adult before, here are some suggestions that might appeal to you!

Spectator Sports

Of course, you don’t have to dive in the deep end and start joining countless sports teams yourself to begin with. If you’re still feeling a little uncomfortable getting back into settings where you’re surrounded by others, you can get involved in spectator sports from the comfort of your own home. Spectator sports are sports that are watched by significant numbers of people and there are plenty of high end events taking place this summer. Some that you might want to tune into include the Euros (soccer), the Wimbledon Championships (tennis), Formula 1 Grand Prix (race car driving), the 149th Open (golf) and the Tour de France (cycling). Most of these events are being aired worldwide for free, so simply choose what you want to watch and make sure to make a note of the events in your calendar. You can see some of the most famous sports trophies handed out!

Individual Sports

While gyms, fitness classes and other activities may have been off-limits for a while, many are now opening back up and allowing people to join in in a socially distanced way. So, why not try out some individual sports that will help you to reach your recommended one hundred and fifty minutes of moderate aerobic exercise each week? There are many that you may have tried out already - jogging, running, cycling - so why not give something new a go? Some interesting classes and sessions include ballet, archery, pole fitness and more!

Local Sports Teams

Depending on where you live, local sports teams may be able to participate in training and events again. This is a great option for those who want to stay fit and socialise at the same time. When you join a sports team, you not only have the fun of learning how to play a new game, but you get to work as a team and bond with others who have similar interests to you. This really is a great and casual way to ease yourself back into socialising.

When you join a team, you’ll want to make sure you have all of the right equipment to participate. For example, you’ll want to have a tennis racket and tennis balls if you choose to get on the tennis court, or you may want to purchase a few Pickleball Paddles if you’re thinking of pickleball. Be prepared when you start your sport so you can keep playing throughout the summer.

2021 really could be the summer of sport, allowing you to enjoy yourself and fill your diary without having to worry excessively about the pandemic. Hopefully, one of the above options works for you!
