Las Vegas's Best Rock Climbing and Hiking Trails

Nevada is now becoming more and more of a climbing destination. With nearly 4,000 routes in Southern Nevada alone, Las Vegas is becoming a hot destination for mountaineers and adventurous explorers.

The most well-known location in the valley is probably Red Rock Canyon. This location is truly the crown jewel of our state! There are so many hiking and great multi-pitch routes to choose from in Red Rock Canyon. There is always a hike for everyone at this location from the novice climbers to the most experienced climbers who are looking for a new enthralling quest. My personal favorite boulder to climb at the Red Rock would be the Plumber’s Crack, which also provides for a great photo opportunity! It is a little different from most climbs and a great one to try when you bring along a varied group of relatively new climbers. There is a single hook at the top of the boulder which can be used for protection.

For the more intermediate and advanced climber, Mount Potosi is an excellent choice. With great limestone cliffs and roofs, this location is quickly becoming a favorite of local climbers, but be warned, this location is relatively new to climbers and most routes are still being made. This location is not recommended for beginner climbers.

For those who are not avid climbers, there are fantastic hiking trails as well. Calico Basin Hiking trail is another great route to take in good weather to see beautiful and colorful rock formations of our great state. This hike is about three miles long and is moderately easy. This hike is great for early Sunday mornings as a family bonding activity!

Turtlehead Peak is a more strenuous and more difficult option for a hiker or hiking group. About 4.6 miles, this hike has various steep hills and a potentially loose pathway. It is recommended to use a trekking stick for support. This hike will take most of your morning or afternoon as the average time to finish is 5 hours.

My personal favorite would be the Ice Box Canyon in the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation area. If this hike is taken between December and April, you might come across seasonal waterfalls which will cool you down very quickly after the arduous trek in the open desert in the beginning. After this taxing hike, the shaded and narrow canyon is a fantastic reward!

There are so many great routes in the Las Vegas area and they are all definitely worth your time!
