One of the benefits of lockdowns caused by the COVID-19 pandemic is that it has given many of us more time at home to enjoy things that we may not have otherwise had a chance to. Whether it is learning new recipes and cooking skills or binge watching series after series on Netflix, there has been much more time available.

Some people may have used their time at home to broaden their cultural horizons -  many activities that were once limited by money and geographical location are more accessible to the wider public than ever before, with everything being streamed or going digital. If this has given you a new love of all things culture, here are five tips to broaden it even further, both during the pandemic and after.

Visit art galleries and museums

Tricky given the current circumstances but many art galleries and museums are available online with video tours and guides, - including the Louvre and the Vatican Museum, but the pandemic will not last forever and one day we will be able to visit places in person again.. Take some time to see what is on at your local one and go and check it out. Sure, some things might not be your jam., but you may be pleasantly surprised.

See a theater production

Whether you live in the middle of New York City or out in the middle of nowhere, there will be theater productions. Some are huge budget productions,, some may be amaterur ones, but there is something for everyone. For example, Travis Preston produced sell-out shows in China a couple of years ago - why not have a look online and see his other work and develop a love of theatre that is perhaps not one of the more mainstream shows?

Take a class

You can do this online at the moment or find an in-person one when things start to open back up. There are hundreds, if not, more free online classes offered by universities, colleges and other reputable educational institutions. Whether you want to learn more about art, a period in history or learn a new language, a class is a great way to broaden your cultural horizons.

Attend a meet and greet with a poet or author

While big chain bookstores are rapidly going down the drain, there has been a boom in the love for independent bookstores, and quite rightly too. In an independent bookstore you can find all manner of books that you may not be able to find anywhere else, as well as supporting a small business and author. Many bookstores offer meet and greets with authors and poets, whether in person or online sessions. It is a great way to ask about a book, the storyline or characters and to see what inspires and drives an author.

Broadening your cultural horizons does not have to be complicated or expensive. Much of it can be done from the comfort of your own home, thanks to online videos and resources.
