Warning Signs a Partner's Alcohol Usage is Out of Control

If your partner has developed a drinking habit, it can be hard to know what to do about it and where to step in. Help isn’t always welcomed by people who are going through addiction and they may not be ready to accept the situation in which they find themselves. You can point them in the right direction, but protecting yourself is also a valid priority.

But what are the warning signs that your partner’s alcohol usage is out of control and possibly veering towards addiction? It’s certainly not an easy question to answer and experiences obviously differ from person to person, but there are some warning signs that you should be looking out for.

If they often say they’re not going to drink or not drink much and then end the evening completely drunk, that’s a sign that things are getting out of control. You might also start to notice that they’re prioritizing their drinking over other important aspects of life.

Once you notice a significant change in their behavior and you feel threatened by it, it’s safest for you to remove yourself from that situation. As the infographic here shows, there’s a clear link between alcohol abuse and domestic violence, and that’s something that shouldn’t be overlooked when it comes to your own safety, regardless how out of character their actions seem.
