You will know the importance of a good smile, of course.

When you open your mouth to smile at others, you will radiate your charm and beauty. You will do much to impress prospective employers and first dates. And you will feel more confident in yourself too. But if your teeth are discolored or damaged in any way, you might be reluctant to smile, and that could affect your life in all kinds of ways.

Of course, if you do have issues with your teeth, there are steps you can take to improve your smile.

You can opt for professional teeth whitening if needed and you could arrange for corrective surgery too. However, your best course of action is to always take preemptive measures. By taking steps to protect your pearly whites you will save yourself a lot of emotional, physical, and financial discomfort later.

To protect your teeth, you will probably know the things you shouldn't be doing each day. You will know that eating sweets will cause tooth decay, for example. However, there are other, perhaps more surprising things people do that harm their teeth, so take note of the following as we explain them to you.

#1: People bite down on things that aren't food

It's sensible to bite through the food in our mouths, but it's less sensible to bite our nails, chew on pencils, or rip through plastic bags when trying to get to the items within. But this is what many people do and they risk chipping their teeth as a consequence. You see, the sharp points of our teeth are also the weakest, so it is foolish to assume we can bite down on any object that isn't a food item. If we don't chip a tooth instantly, we will constantly wear it away through the persistent biting and chewing of other, non-edible items.

#2: People overload themselves on fruit juices and smoothies

This might be surprising to you! You know that a can of Coke a day is one way to fast-track a visit to the dentist, but did you know that the fruit juices and smoothies you drink can also be problematic? Sure, they do have their health properties, but because they can be heavily acidic, they can also cause the enamel on your teeth to erode. This could eventually lead to tooth decay. Ouch! So, as well as cutting down on fizzy drinks, cut down on fruit juices and smoothies too. When you do drink something potentially harmful, be sure to brush your teeth soon after.

#3: People make mistakes when brushing their teeth

It shouldn't be that hard to brush our teeth, right? Well, it is for some people. They are those people who use toothbrushes that are long past their period of usefulness. And some people brush too heavily on their teeth and chip away at their enamel as a result. Here are some other toothbrushing mistakes people make. Take heed then and be mindful of how you brush your teeth. You might do more harm than good if you make a blundersome error.

These are just a few of the things that people do that harm their teeth. You can probably think of others! Do the right thing then and do what you can to protect your teeth. This way, you will be able to avoid regular visits to the dentist, and you will be able to preserve your beautiful smile.
