Why Does My Back Hurt?

Contrary to popular belief, back pain is experienced by people of all ages and genders all over the world. Although old age gives our bodies more creakiness, aches and pains, our spines and back muscles can be painful due to a multitude of reasons at any age. Here is a guide to back pain causes, and solutions, so you can give your spine the treatment it deserves!

Sleeping

If your back hurts all the time in one way or another, it’s time to check out how you are sleeping. Firstly, look at your mattress. When we sleep, our spines, ideally, relax and allow the surface beneath us to provide the support it needs while we rest. However, a mattress that is saggy and infirm will not adequately support your spine, causing your muscles to “guard” the vulnerable nerves and vertebrae. This will lead to sore, tense muscles - you may experience knots, too, which are both painful and hard to get rid of.

What’s the solution to sleep-induced back pain? Try shopping for a memory foam mattress and a set of firm pillows which will properly support your spine and muscles while you sleep.

Your Job

If, like a lot of people, you work at a desk, this could be contributing to your back pain. As humans, we are not designed to sit at a desk all day, hunched over a laptop. It’s not natural for us. If you don’t do enough to look after your back while working a nine-to-five, you could be giving your back a hard time.

How do you look after your back when working at a desk? Firstly, stretch. Stretch every single day. This could feel like a chore at first, but once you begin a stretching routine, you won’t be able to go a day without it. Stretching helps your spine, muscles, joints and mind relax, align, and generally feel better. Secondly, take a look at how you are sitting. Are you hunched over? If so, invest in a laptop stand which makes you sit upright to see your work.

A Deeper Problem

In some rare cases, chronic back pain can be the cause of a deeper problem. Medical issues like fibromyalgia, which causes constant stiffness in the joints and fatigue, and can be significantly painful, cause back pain. These are not very common, but if you feel like your back pain isn’t lifestyle-induced, you should see your doctor.

If diagnosed with fibromyalgia, there are options for natural fibromyalgia treatment. You should do your own research as well as speaking to your doctor about all possible options for treatment and pain relief.

Conclusion

Back pain is pretty normal - but we should all be doing what we can to try and combat it. Remember, pain is your body’s response to something being wrong; if your back hurts, you need to take care of it.
