Companies You Should Know About That Are Erasing the Stigma Around Periods
There is undoubtedly a definite lack of openness, education, and awareness around periods that drives a lot of shame and stigma that make us feel like we need to hide our periods and suffer in silence. Thankfully, because of international agencies like U.N. Women, Plan International, Unicef, and activism, the hardships & stigma women face across the globe have significantly lessened and the fact that more and more initiatives are changing the way people perceive periods is heartening, to say the least. These not only fight against the stigmatization of periods and make the conversation around it feel more natural and open, but also give back by donating part of the proceeds to those in need.
1. Period Aisle
“Period Aisle” is a company devoted to making periods a more environmentally conscious and socially just experience. Not only does it offer a great variety of reusable period products, but it also encourages open and honest conversations about reproductive health. It recognizes the rights of millions of women around the world who live in poverty, who do not have access to period products, or education through projects such as “AFRIpads,” “Period Promise,” or “Native Youth Sexual Health Network.”
2. Period Movement
“Period Movement” is a youth-led non-profit that is fighting to put an end to period poverty and stigmatization by providing service, education, and advocacy. With the help of campaigns like “Free the Period,” it addresses the marginalized communities that are in need of period products and advocates for the change of gender-biased legislation that continues to view period products as luxury items, as opposed to essential hygiene measures.
3. Power Period
“Power Period” is a community that aims to erase period stigma by promoting conversation, educating people, sharing important information, and organizing workshops and events.
