Progression
This week, Tunisia passed a truly enticing and meaningful constitution widely regarded as a progressive and monumental document.
Under the umbrella of representation in the government and in social settings, the document guaranteed equality between men and women, made a constitutional mandate for environmental protection (only the third country in the world to do so), a declaration that health care is a human right with preventative care and treatment for every citizen, a democracy with civil laws that respects freedom of religion, and an established right to due process and protection from torture.
Simply, Tunisia has become more democratic than many Western countries that claim to have the same values.
Not only is this a revolution for democracy, but it is also a revolution for human rights across the world. It is a huge moment for Tunisia, which has persevered through terrorist attacks and assassinations. The more the world recognizes that this Constitution has the potential to change the world, the faster Tunisia can shine as an example to all countries, both Western and arab, and the faster we may be able to achieve world peace.
