Don't Just Do Well. Do Good!

In the modern world, one of the things that many of us are encouraged to do as much as possible is to be selfish. We're encouraged to take what we need, give as little back as possible, and only worry about ourselves and the people in our lives. Of course, most people don't want to live that way. If you asked any random person on the street, they would tell you that they would want to do some good in the world and not just focus on their own needs. But how can you go about doing that? In a world that only ever encourages you to do well, how can you go about doing some good?

Switch careers

If you spend all day working for no real purpose other than to make money for your employer, it's incredibly easy to start feeling frustrated. You feel as though you're not really doing anything that worthwhile with your time which can naturally be a pretty unpleasant experience. If that's the case then why not think about trying to do something better with your career. Watch this Saud Bin Saqr Al Quasimi speech. In it, he talks about working for the greater good and leaving the world a better place when you're gone. Think about the kinds of careers that could help you do that. Whether it's working with young people as a teacher, or as a care worker for older and vulnerable people. There are plenty of careers out there for those who want to help others and make the world a better place.

Work with non-profit organisations

Of course, if you don't want to dedicate your entire life to that kind of thing, and it's totally understandable if you don't, then why not look for some organisations that you can get involved with and volunteer with in your spare time. If there are two things that all charities need it's money and hands on deck. You can easily provide both of those things, even if it's just for a few hours a week.

Be kind & respectful to others

It’s essential that in order to do good, we’re good at other people. We’re all different and that’s what makes us so unique. With that being said, we all have different beliefs, whether it’s discussing the day of the Lord and religion in general to our viewpoints on the world in a variety of topics. With that being said, it’s important to be kind and respectful to everyone you cross paths with.

Find causes to champion

Everyone has their own priorities and things that they care about, so why not start to champion them? Whatever cause you can get behind, why not become vocal about trying to make a change. It could be a social issue, and economic one, or perhaps something involving climate change. The choice is entirely yours, but it can often be a really worthwhile use of your time to try and bring an important issue to more people's attention wherever you can.

The reality is that you're never going to be able to spend all of your time doing the kinds of things that you want to do when it comes to helping the world at large. As much as unchecked selfishness can be dangerous, if you try and worry about everyone else all of the time, then there'll be no one left to worry about you! Doing good in the world is wonderful, but self-care is just as important.
