Boosting Self-Esteem: Is Cosmetic Surgery The Answer?

Time and time again, we hear about young women in the media who choose to undergo cosmetic surgery to improve how they feel about themselves. Because plastic surgery has become a common method of boosting self-esteem among celebs, lots of women are opting to go down the same path.

The role of cosmetic surgery in relation to confidence is one that’s difficult to understand. The problem is that there are so many differing opinions on it. And because of this, it seems as if there will never be an answer to the question‘ is cosmetic surgery the answer to low self-esteem?’. It would appear that it’s simply down to personal opinion.

That being said, below are some examples of the pros and cons of cosmetic surgery in regards to boosting self-esteem. If you’re unsure whether cosmetic surgery is the answer, the below information should help you to work it out.

Fixing something that you hate can change how you feel about yourself. If there’s a part of your body that you’ve always disliked, then changing it could be what it takes to make you feel happier and more confident. Take Kylie Jenner, for example. She always hated her lips and envied the pout that her sister Kim Kardashian had. So as soon as she was old enough, she opted to have lip fillers to increase the size of her lips. Now, she’s happier and more confident in herself, which is evident from her Instagram.

The above example aside, it’s important to understand that there are no guarantees. The truth is that like any medical procedure, there is an element of risk. Whether it’s breast augmentation or lip fillers, there is a chance that something could go wrong. Obviously, by choosing a reputable cosmetic clinic and surgeon, this risk is lower. However, that’s not to say that it doesn’t exist and shouldn’t be taken into account. Each year there are thousands of cosmetic surgery claims. This means that a small percentage of procedures go wrong every year. The risk may be slight, but if you’re going to go under the knife, it’s something that you need to be aware of.

Your confidence issues may be deeper than your appearance. Many of us make the mistake of thinking that our confidence issues are due to how we look. However, most of the time, they are much deeper than our appearance. Even if we are certain that one of our features is the cause, often that’s just not the case. Say, for example, you have always thought that your nose was the cause of your self-esteem issues. So you opt to have a nose job to make it smaller but find that you still lack confidence. The reason for this could be because your nose was just part of the problem, you still haven’t learnt to love and accept yourself.

While in some instances cosmetic surgery can be the answer to low self-esteem, that’s not always the case. The fact is whether or not surgery is the answer to confidence issues depends on a range of factors - there is no clear answer.
