Why Are You So Ashamed To Seek Out Medical Help?
Why have we as a society decided that it’s shameful to seek out medical help when we have a problem? If your leg isn’t hanging off or you’re not on the verge of death, we seem to have decided that asking for help is a bad thing, but we can’t understand why this has happened. If you have a health problem, you need to get it checked before it gets worse, not let it get worse and then seek out help. Where is the sense in that?
In this article, we’re going to be talking about some of the reasons why people are ashamed to seek out medical help, and why you shouldn’t be. Interested? Read on.
Embarrassing Issues
One of the most common reasons for people to be ashamed to see a medical professional is because they have got an embarrassing issue. But the thing is, why are you embarrassed? We can assure you that the doctor doesn’t care, probably isn’t going to bat an eyelid and has almost definitely seen worse. They don’t flinch at body parts that we have decided are taboo. They don’t see these things the same way that you do, they simply see a problem to be fixed.
It might be on your genitals, it might be on your butt, or it might just be gross and you’re worried about letting anyone see. No matter what it is, you need help, and trust us when we say your doctor would rather you go before it gets worse.
Judgment
Who is judging you? Those people in the waiting room who are there for the exact same reason that you are? Who cares about them? You don’t know them, and you’re likely never going to see them again so why does it matter if they’re looking at you in a certain way? Of course it’s uncomfortable and not nice, but is it worth forgoing the kind of medical care that you need? No, it is not.
If you speak to your doctor first, they may not be able to help you personally but they may be able to point you in the right direction which can be just as helpful. For example, you may need chiropractic care to take care of your neck and back issues, or you may need to be referred to a different specialist. The point is, the judgement of others is irrelevant because you need help.
Fear Of Wasting Time
Finally, a lot of people don’t go to the doctor as they are worried they are not sick enough to do so and feel as though they are wasting time. Have you ever heard the phrase ‘better to be safe than sorry’? Because that’s the mantra that you should be following, always.
It’s time that we changed the narrative and that people who needed to see a medical professional felt that they were able to do so, no matter what the problem. The silly thing about all of this is that it’s not even the doctors themselves that people are worried about judging them, it’s other people in the doctor's office.
