Black Women and Girls Are Not Magical: We Are Human Like You
Black Girl Magic…
I wish I had Black Girl Magic. I wish I could fly, I wish I could heal all of the sick.
However, much to my dismay,
Black women and girls are not actually made of magic.
Black women and girls are not actually made of chocolate and sparkly things.
Black women and girls are however, made out of flesh and bone.
Black women and girls are just that. We are women and girls.
As easy as it seems to decipher, many cannot fathom this thought. This is seen with the brutal treatment of black women and girls.
Sorry to disappoint you but the melanin on our skin doesn't make us hurt any less.
The melanin on our skin does not transform the pain and suffering that exudes from you into elation that we can absorb.
Why is it normal for a group of large men to assault two Black women known as Jamila and Ashia Regan over a simple misunderstanding?
I will tell you why. It is because our powerful melanin is seen as a threat and is ultimately seen before any ounce of womanhood that we possess.
If we are women just like all other women in the world, why does the world see to it that we be treated as if we are stronger than any other women?
Why does the world see to it to gawk whenever we cry or show an ounce of emotion?
The Answer: “The Strong Black Woman.”
I would like to request on behalf of all Black women and girls that we all stop with this preconceived notion on how Black women and girls should be, how we should act, and how we should feel.
I would like to request on behalf of all Black women and girls that we all stop believing that Black women have to these strong, masculine beings.
I would like to request on behalf of all Black women and girls that you hear our pain and hurt.
And what especially hurts is to know that our pain is taken less seriously than others who don't possess our skin color.
Our emotions will be dismissed because we aren't supposed to have them.
But, we are soft, like you.
We are not strong all the time.
We do not have superpowers or magical abilities.
We cannot handle an immense amount of pain- we hurt.
Black women and girls are not magical, we are human, we are women, and we are girls so we ask that you treat us as such.
