As you start to get older and your body goes through changes, it’s more important than ever that you look after your health. People often think that this only applies to people in their 50’s but the truth is, health problems will start to emerge a lot earlier than that. Often, the key to staying healthy as you get older is spotting the signs of problems early on, before they get a lot worse. The first thing to remember is that you need to trust your doctor and go and see them as soon as you notice something wrong. Putting it off is only going to make things worse in the future. But what exactly should you be looking out for? These are the health problems you should never ignore.
Hearing Loss
Hearing loss is usually associated with people that are a lot older but the reality is, it can affect anybody at any time so you should always be aware of it. It usually starts out small, maybe you find yourself asking people to repeat themselves a lot, or you’re turning up the volume on your TV a little higher than you used to. If you notice any changes like that, go and see your doctor because you might need hearing aids. People are often worried about seeing a doctor for hearing problems because they think that it’s embarrassing for somebody that is relatively young to have hearing aids. But most of the modern ones are barely even noticeable once you’ve got them in and if you have hearing problems, it can affect your ability to get involved with social situations and it can be incredibly isolating. Don’t let your worries about having hearing aids affect your life, just go and speak to the doctor.
Fatigue
We all live a very fast paced lifestyle these days and a lot of people just put fatigue down to being busy. Sometimes, that is the case and if you’ve been running around all week trying to manage a lengthy to-do list, you’re going to be tired. But if the feelings of fatigue persist for a couple of weeks, it could be a sign of something worse. It could be a sign of depression brought about by stress or you may even have hypothyroidism, a hormone deficiency which can bring on fatigue. Being tired for a day or two is normal but if you’re tired all the time, you should see a doctor.
Chest Pain
Chest pain is a warning sign for everybody but the pain associated with heart disease is often more subtle in women than it is in men, so you need to keep an eye on it. If it’s only happening now and again, it’s likely to be heartburn. But if you’ve got a regular pain, even if it’s only small, that could be a sign of a much bigger problem. Don’t just put it off and get on with your day, go and see a doctor and get it checked out.
If you ignore these symptoms, you might end up developing a serious health condition. But if you go to the doctor right away, you can usually avoid that.
