What Makes BTS Special

The first time I really saw a BTS video was in 2016 when they released Blood, Sweat, & Tears. I remember thinking that there was something special about them as a group, even if I didn’t become a real fan until later on. The choreography was incredible, their vocal and rapping talent were distinctive, and the video as a whole was unlike anything I had seen at the time. After that, I didn’t think too much about it. I then saw some performances,  the music video for “Spring Day,” and then “DNA” later that year. Though I wasn’t fully invested at the time, those were some of my favorite music videos. I knew for a while, but it became clear then that they were definitely a group to watch.

Now that I’m an “A.R.M.Y.” (which is what they call their fans), I realize there is so much that truly makes BTS special and sets them apart from so many other artists and groups. Let’s start with the members. Those who make up BTS—RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook—all have unique personalities which I feel like contribute to a big part of why they resonate with fans. They are often relatable and open, which makes it easy for people to understand them and see themselves as similar to them on some level. BTS releases a lot of videos of themselves, from behind-the-scenes content to episodes of the many shows they’ve had, and this really gives the audience a feel of who they are as individuals and as a group.

Considering their talent, BTS is on a whole different level. At first, I wasn’t sure what I was getting into when I clicked on their videos. However, after just a performance or two, it’s hard not to get hooked. They have commanding stage presence thanks to their dancing and performing skills. Honestly, it’s too bad we can’t watch all seven of them at the same time because they all bring something of their own to every performance. In terms of their singing and rapping abilities, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. They constantly improve and experiment with different music styles, making everything they release interesting and fresh. Really, they could release an entire album of them just talking, and I’d still listen. But their vocals span a wide range: some of their songs calm me, others bring me happiness or get me excited and on my feet.

They were also very involved in the album-making process of their most-recent album, BE. From directing music videos or visuals to writing and producing the music, the band took a lot of initiative in this album’s creation process. BE was highly anticipated after the huge success of their song “Dynamite” this year, and they do not disappoint. There’s really something for everyone on the album, as it ranges from EDM to Pop to R&B, etc. That’s something else that I feel sets them apart: they try so many different things, and they offer something for all of their fans to fall in love with.

The biggest reason I think BTS is special is because of how authentic and genuine they are. It’s clear that they are actually like family to one another, and they never try to hide that fact. Since they are comfortable with each other, they produce entertaining and fun-to-watch content. More than that, they genuinely care about their fans. They always do what they can to support the A.R.M.Y. and often express their love towards the fandom. BTS has always spread important messages, one of their biggest being to love yourself. This has helped a lot of people—even myself—feel confident and gain self-love.

If you have not listened to their music or watched any of their videos, I highly recommend it. They really have something for everyone and every mood you might be in. I don’t doubt that you’ll see what makes them one of the biggest artists in the world. If anything, I think after seeing them only a handful of times, it’s easy to see what makes them special.
