5 Movies To Watch While Self-Isolating

Right now, during social distancing, it’s especially hard to stay calm. I myself am more restless than ever before. It’s important we acknowledge that being bored enough to watch films right now is a privilege, as there are serious issues people are facing in this uncertain time.

But for those of us who want some comfort, I’ve made a list of five of my favourite movies, or film franchises, that may be able to provide some joy in this time.

Searching (Dir. Aneesh Chaganty)

This film is a mystery/thriller that focuses on father David Kim (John Cho). His teen daughter disappears mysteriously and launches a serious investigation. It all changes when he finds his daughter’s laptop and goes on the hunt for his own clues to find out what really happened.

The reason this movie stands out is because it was all shot as a series of screen recordings on laptops, cellphones, helicopter cameras, etc. It is also the first major thriller to feature an Asian American lead. The film itself is filled with plot twists and edge-of-your-seat action.

I’d recommend this film to anyone who wants a unique, suspenseful experience and likes to figure out the mystery right along with the characters. It is one of the most original films I have ever watched.

Love, Simon (Dir. Greg Berlanti)

Love, Simon is an instant feel-good movie. The story is centred on closeted 17-year-old Simon Spier (Nick Robinson), based on the novel Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda. Simon begins to develop feelings for a classmate online under the name “Blue,” but hasn’t told anyone that he’s gay and doesn’t know the true identity of the boy he is talking to.

The journey is funny, heartwarming, and groundbreaking. It is the first major Hollywood film focused on an LGBTQIA+ teenage romance.

I would recommend this movie to anyone who wants a fun watch, something endearing with interesting character dynamics and a main character it's easy to root for.

Harry Potter series

Who doesn’t love Harry Potter? If you have extra time right now and are looking for a magical adventure to get your mind off things, watching (or re-watching) the entire Harry Potter movie series is a great place to start.

If you aren’t familiar, the films are based on J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter novels, which follow protagonist Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) when he is pulled into the Wizarding World, attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry with friends Hermione Granger (Emma Watson) and Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint).

This is a great watch if you want a classic, exciting set of movies to watch, especially if you’ve never gotten the chance before. I promise it’ll be worth it!

Molly’s Game (Dir. Aaron Sorkin)

This movie is an Oscar-nominated, drama-filled adventure focused on poker game runner Molly Bloom (Jessica Chastain). She hosted games for well-known actors, athletes, businessmen, and even Russian mob members. Even more interesting is the fact that it is based on real events.

Jessica Chastain shines as an actress, and the storyline is intense and twisting. The director, Sorkin, is known for writing similarly captivating stories like The Social Network (another amazing watch).

I’d say this film is for anyone who wants an entertaining and exhilarating crime movie with captivating energy and fierce female lead.

Hercules (Dir. Ron Clements, John Musker)

I wanted to include an animated film on the list for those of us who love a happy, easygoing film. Hercules has always been an underrated favourite of mine. It centres on half-god Hercules (Tate Donovan) on Earth, who goes on a journey to prove he deserves God-status and a chance to live on Mount Olympus.

The soundtrack is legendary, the heroine is strong and hilarious, and Hades, the villain, is one of the best Disney has to offer.

I recommend this film for anyone who wants to unwind, watch something with their family, or just wants something playing in the background. It’s a classic, and always puts me in a good mood
