The Hottest Trends In The 2020 Music Industry

Looking at music trends is always a fun way to see what’s popping and what type of music we can expect to see more of in the future. As with pretty much all forms of art, music trends go through phases where certain things grow in popularity for a short period. So, what’s got everyone all hot and bothered this year? Let’s take a look at the top music trends of 2020 so far:

Female Rappers

The back end of 2019 and the beginning of 2020 has seen a resurgence in female rap artists. The two women leading the way are Megan Thee Stallion and Doja Cat. Of course, Nicki Minaj has been flying the flag for years, but we’re finally seeing more women move into the spotlight and make big rap hits. Men have dominated the rap game for years, so it’s great to see some women get the recognition they deserve. Not only that, but it’s great to see women rapping about similar stuff to men without being judged! There are so many awesome female rappers out there, and 2020 is the year where more will come to the fore.

Viral Dances

One of the more recent trends is the birth of viral dances flooding social media platforms as of late. If you love music, then you’ll love it when music comes with specific dances to follow along and copy! This trend has come thanks to the new TikTok craze that’s got everyone doing short videos of them dancing. But, this is also fuelled by many artists releasing songs and then filming their own short videos doing a specific dance to that song. Everyone copies them, it generates huge interest in the music, and the song goes viral. So, expect to see plenty more viral dances in the music world for the time being.

Kpop

Yes, you can’t talk about music trends without mentioning the biggest of them all. Regardless of whether or not you like this music, there’s no avoiding Kpop online. It seems like under every viral tweet there are at least ten people posting videos or gifs of popular Kpop groups. It’s more than just a trend, it’s a full-scale musical movement that comes along with tailored merchandise, official light sticks, and fans that can only be compared to those who began Beatlemania.

When you actually dive into this scene, it’s easy to see why it’s so popular. Kpop is pretty much set up to appeal to a mass audience. All the main stars are made up of bands. Instantly, this draws in the young audience who love identifying with specific band members and enjoy the band dynamic. As you can see from this IZ*ONE Profile, the interesting thing about Kpop bands is that they’re massive. A typical band may include five members max, but Kpop bands have over ten members all the time. The music itself is a blend of pop, dance, and sometimes even hip-hop/rap.it’s the first real example of a genre taking off in popularity and almost forming a musical culture of its own.

If you’re not a fan of any of these things, then you’re in for a rough 12 months on the music scene! If you are a fan, then rejoice as you’re about to see more of them in the future.
