The Supernatural Fandom

“Saving people. Hunting things. The family business.” - Supernatural

Supernatural aired its first episode on September 13, 2005. No one could imagine that from that point on, Supernatural would become one of the longest running and greatest sci-fi TV series in America.

What is Supernatural?

Supernatural is a sci-fi show about two brothers, Sam and Dean Winchester, who hunt monsters and fight sinister forces. In this world of Supernatural, Sam and Dean are bonafide hunters on a mission to kill the demon who murdered their mother years ago.

Supernatural Inspiration

When Supernatural aired, I was only six years old. So, I was late coming into the Supernatural fandom. It wasn’t until high school that I learned about Supernatural and my life was changed for the better.

This show was really an escape from the harsh realities of life. It was also a way for me to purge all my anger, sadness, and loneliness into watching two brothers struggle against evil forces. On the surface, the show appears to be about hunters killing monsters and saving the world from ending. But, the show is much more than that. It means much more than that.

There are not only monsters in this show, but a story of a journey two brothers go on to protect each other and the ones they love. There’s betrayal, heartbreak, tragedy, and life or death choices that Sam and Dean must make that sometimes makes them question who they are and what their mission is.

There is truth to this fictional show and messages for those struggling with their own demons, tragedies, and losses. The main characters are constantly beaten down, tortured, and stretched to their limit, but what is so inspiring is that they continue to hold on to each other for strength. Sam and Dean have many flaws (who doesn’t) and don’t always make the best or most selfless decisions, but they fight with everything they have because they value family and the lives of others.

The Supernatural Fandom is so large because we recognize and appreciate the messages of hope that the show sends. Not only the show, but the actors as well value the very same things that their characters do in the show. The interaction between the fandom and the actors is incredible. Whether it’s conventions, comic cons, Twitter, Instagram, or tours, every actor treats the fandom as a family. They joke, they laugh, they smile, and they cry with us every step of the way.

As the show comes to an end, I hope we can all appreciate the efforts everyone who's worked on the show has put into making it so successful and meaningful.

Every time I hear, “Carry On Wayward Son”, I smile at all the wonderful memories from an astonishing 15 years of hard work and dedication.

Thank you Supernatural for being an inspiration and an array of joy for all of the Supernatural fans worldwide!
