The Challenges of Living Alone

Living alone is something that everyone should aim to do for a period in their lives, it teaches you so much. However, it comes with its challenges too, here are some that you may face (and how to get over them) if you want to live alone.

Finances

One of the most difficult things about living alone is most definitely the financial element. Living with another person means all of the bills are split- you might spend a little less on things like gas, electricity and water when you live alone but for the most part, it’s always going to be much more expensive. Work out your money carefully before you move out, make sure you’re able to cover all of your rent, bills, car, food and any extra expenses that might crop up. It will probably be a case that you’ll need to move to a smaller property or  cheaper area if you want to live alone and be able to afford everything.

Security

When you live alone, chances are you’re a little more paranoid about your security. It can be a little daunting living by yourself, but put some security measures in place and you should be fine. Smart CCTV devices like cameras and Ring Doorbell can be bought pretty cheaply these days and can give you peace of mind. You can also check into the various available alarms out there to secure your home. A security alarm is something your landlord might have fitted for you if you ask, as it's crucial to fit your Alarm systems correctly in order for them to work efficiently. Keeping doors and windows locked and secure is something all of us should be doing anyway- take some precautions and you wont be any more vulnerable than anyone else.

Practial skills

One of the trickiest things about living alone is learning to do everything by yourself. When you live with others you have their skills to fall back on when you need them, when you’re on your own you’ll need to figure out how to do things yourself. This can be a fantastic learning opportunity, a chance to learn how to cook well, how to do laundry, pay bills and all of the other adult things we need to be able to do in life. Learn as you go, Google is your best friend and know your limits. Don’t start making any adjustments or changes that are outside of your lease or skill set, things like changing light fittings for exmple could cause a shock to someone else if they’re not fitted properly. The next thing you know you’ll have injury lawyers knocking on your door. Try your best to do what you can, but know when something is out of your abilities.

Loneliness

Some people find living alone really empowering and peaceful. Others struggle, finding it lonely and isolated. If you’re feeling this way, give yourself time to adjust as it will probably change as you get used to it. Make an effort to see friends and family when they’re free and the rest of the time when you’re alone you won’t feel so isolated.
