Start a Women’s Empowerment Association Today!
Looking for a way to be involved in your school, university, or workplace? Start a Women’s Empowerment Association! Personally being a leader of one at my high school has allows me to gain perspectives on the events happening around me and make new friends. It is a great way to really make change for your community, meet new friends, and have fun! Here are a few tips to start one:
1. REMEMBER YOU ARE SUPPORTING GENDER EQUALITY….NOT PUTTING MEN DOWN
Some people believe that such associations are there to show how women are better, and men are villains. It is important to clear this misconception, and that you want to promote equality for both men and women.
2. MAKE IT GENDER INCLUSIVE AND INVITE MEN TO JOIN
Change will be more likely to happen when you have both men and women supporting the cause. Make an extra effort to call men to meetings, and give incentives. Even though it is definitely difficult, it will take your organization to the next level.
3. ADVERTISE THE ADVANTAGES OF BEING A MEMBER
Generally, an average meeting of the club at our school constitutes of my team highlighting current events of women or gender equality on the news. Afterward, we give members a variety of volunteering and internship opportunities related to helping women, children, or the gender equality movement in our area. Members feel like they are involved in helping the community, and want to continue to be members to get more opportunities in the future.
4. KEEP SCHEDULES FLEXIBLE…AND HAVE FUN!
Not all club meetings have to be intense with discussing emotional, controversial issues — just go with the flow! Have some meetings where members are free to do what they like. Maybe have a guest speaker, watch a movie, eat lots of food, or play a game! Maybe the group can attend the annual Women's March if it is happening close by. Creating fun bonding moments with the group makes the organization stronger as a whole!
Good Luck starting a club this fall… and prepare to have lots of fun!
