Short Story: "A Charming Start"
As the summer breeze blows right by the many months of fall, the lake gets stiller…quieter. I sit on the deck and dunk my feet into the green, lukewarm water and time seems to race by. It’s 2 PM and already, the sun manages to bring the golden hour. Specks of sun rays run through my luscious orange locks and summer kisses me softly before the fall takes over its shift. I cringe to see the joy of summer nights gone, only to be seen in another year. A voice of soft velvet crawls into my ear and helplessly, I turn around to see who's singing the luring siren. It’s the new, boy next door. He sits by me and mimics my position. A foreign, but forgiving chill crawls over me as I slowly gaze at his figure, hoping to find his style - hoping to read his character. His hair curves in the motion of the wind and adds to its scruffiness.
Beyond the fact that I don’t know anything about this boy, I get a sense of a warm welcoming from him. “
It’s beautiful out here.” he says.
“Yeah, you’ve picked the right time to see it.” I say.
We both turn to look at each other, gingerly. A telepathic silence rings through our ears, giving us a chance to stare into each other’s supple faces a little longer. The awkwardness wakes us up into reality and I can’t help but let out a chuckle of relief. He does, too and I see him staring at me in the corner of my eye. It makes me wonder - who knew I was going to have this encounter, and who knew that a two-sentence conversation was going to mean so much to me? All I know now is that seasons may be the same next year, and this warm, golden hour may pass me by, but this time, life will bring a different charm for me to ring. I know that this time, it’s going to be a special year.
