Women’s March: Standing Up for Human Rights

On January 21, 2017, countries all over the world saw women, men, and children come together in the fight for women’s rights. Wearing pink hats as a symbol of solidarity, the protesters marched in unity to counteract the hatred and division that has been the rhetoric of the recent presidential election. According to the Women’s March National Committee, their purpose was to send the message that women’s rights are human rights. With the main demonstration taking place in Washington, the movement spread worldwide with signs saying things such as “The Future is Female” and “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun-damental Human Rights.”

Many celebrities joined the movement and used their voices to take a stand against inequality. America Ferrera and Scarlett Johansson both gave a speech at the Women’s March on Washington. Some of the most memorable moments were when Ferrera said that we must march for our future and for the moral core of this country and Johansson urged President Trump to support mothers, sisters, and all the women of our nation. Watch their full speeches below:

As both men and women alike marched all over the world, they sent a beautiful message of strength and unity after the hateful rhetoric of the past few months. This movement is a powerful reminder that when we come together, we are stronger than ever. By empowering others and urging them to make their voices heard and make themselves known, we are one step closer to making a difference. The Women’s March gives hope for change in the future and a world in which men and women have equal rights.
