Michelle Mone: A Role Model in My Culture

by Caitlin Connolly

Michelle Mone is a commendable entrepreneur who has thoroughly earned her spot in the business world today. If you are not Scottish, it is unlikely you will be aware of her triumph although she has received a copious amount of acknowledgement and recognition, and in turn, became one of Scotland’s most iconic stars. Admittedly, after reading her autobiography, detailing the highs, lows and milestones of her astonishing life, it proves that drive and determination is all it takes to live the life of your dreams. She has led a remarkable life and is a strong, powerful lady that many Scottish females aspire to be like.

Notwithstanding, hard work is essential as Mone struggled early in life.  Amazingly, she left school with no qualifications before becoming a teenage mum which was a further obstacle she was forced to overcome. Immense courage, determination and bravery encouraged her to partner with her husband and build their own empire, earning remarkable profits from vending essential items in every woman’s closet. She founded the lingerie brand Ultimo, which has featured in renowned advertising campaigns and blockbuster films. To award her strong work ethic, Mone was awarded an OBE in 2010, which enhanced her status and thus allowed her to take on further roles to aid stimulation of business start ups.

Her honesty and self belief is strong: "To be honest with you, I could wipe the floor with any designer and I have never been to college or uni... I have got a real, I suppose, talent for it and I just love it.”

She believes that anything is possible: "It doesn't matter where you're from or what education you have; if you have a big dream, you can do it.”

Think like Michelle Mone, act like Michelle Mone and work like Michelle Mone and the world is your oyster.
