Which Side Am I On?
I'm a brown-skinned girl
With thick, coarse hair,
And skin that's not fair.
But my skin is lighter than "real" Africans
And darker than Arabs.
It's a roller coaster down and up.
Because I come from
A place called Sudan
Where you don't have a race clan.
You say you're from Africa
Cause that's where Sudan is,
But people say you're not.
But the Arabs brought
Their culture to my motherland.
But they say I'm banned
From being a part of their race.
I look at my face.
I am an alien.
Not a part of anyone's world.
It causes my brain to whirl.
Trying to understand,
But I do understand.
That this is what makes me special.
So my mind settles
On the idea
That I'm in my own world
Uniquely me and beautiful.
