The Lowdown On The Internet Of Things (IoT)

The Lowdown On The Internet Of Things (IoT)

If you’re a bit of a technology nerd or you read a lot of tech news, then you’ve probably seen the term ‘Internet of Things’ banded about quite a lot. Often, it’s spoken about in it's abbreviated form - IoT- and there’s a lot to know about it. If you’re curious to understand more about this particular tech topic, then here’s the lowdown on everything you need to know?

What is the Internet of Things?

The general definition is that this is a network of different things that are all connected to the internet. These can be everyday objects and things that have been around for a long time, but they’re now built with IP addresses and can communicate with other devices that have internet connections.

What are IoT devices?

An IoT device is essentially any object that has an internet connection and can communicate with many different things via this connection. There are so many examples of this, many of which you probably have around you right now. Think about lights in your home that can connect to a mobile app and be turned on or off when you’re not even near the physical switch. Consider a fridge that alerts you when you’re low on milk and can broadcast a live video feed of the inside direct to your mobile device. If something can connect online and provide functions as a result of the connection, then it’s an IoT device.

How are the IoT devices used?

IoT devices are used in so many different ways, and we’re starting to see them pop up across many different industries. Businesses are beginning to implement the internet of things into their daily operations. There are even companies offering IoT consultation and design advice for businesses, and you can view Shiverware for details on that. We see the internet of things in action every day without even realizing it as well. Things like cars are connected to the internet, we have clocks and watches that do the same as well. While all these devices can have different functions, the main aim of them is to make life easier for us humans. The internet of things looks to improve convenience and encourage connectivity between device.

What does the future hold for the Internet of Things?

No future predictions will ever be 100% accurate, but we can make some pretty solid ones with the Internet of Things. For one, more and more IoT devices will flood the market, meaning we’ll see loads of different things all connected to the internet. What’s more, the intelligence of these devices will only improve, increasing the functions they can provide. Finally, we will see these devices improve their communication with one another. For example, using the light scenario from earlier, it could get to the point where your lights turn off and communicate with other electrical devices to automatically turn them off at the same time, saving energy.

The Internet of Things showcases how far technology has come, and also how much more there is to give. Human life is becoming saturated with tech as we look for more and more ways of increasing convenience by using technological solutions.
