Can Writing Be More Important That Reading For Kids?

Many of us lucky enough to be shared the wonderful world of literature, will remember a time we got lost. We traveled so far and so deep into a world that was so real in our minds, we wished we could escape to it. All it was, was a book. A piece of fiction that had fantastic characters that we would be lucky to call our friends in the real world. A land that was far and the length and breadth of it was filled with adventure. Many of us even imagined it with our friends after sharing the books and stories we loved with them. Going out into the playground at school, you’d reenact what you read and try to live in that fantasy world. Now that you’re older and maybe you’re a parent, you have to ask yourself by using your own experiences, is writing more important than reading? How does one impact the other and what if your child is good at one but not the other?

What reading does

What is imagination? Maybe we’re the only animal that’s ever lived to truly treasure our own ability to leave this mortal world but only for a moment in our minds. A world that we can’t touch, smell, feel, taste or see but it's almost so real we could mistaken ourselves to be in it. Reading to children is the first thing that every parent should do, rather than to let them read on their own. This gets them interested as you paint the picture for them all they’ve got to do is jump in and explore. It says that you are already in that world of adventure and excitement, and you’re building a bridge for them. The more you read to them the more interested they get in stories and imagination. They cross the bridge when they’re ready because now they want to be in control of the world they dive into. They’ll begin reading thanks to you, for giving them the love of imagination.

What writing does

Once they’ve read stories that make their eyes light up and pay more attention than when they watch their favorite tv show, it's time to give them the gift of creative writing. All those pent up ideas they have and daydream about such as superpowers, being a dragon or looking over the top of a mountain can now be manifested in real life. But teaching them how to formulate a story and articulate their thoughts into coherent sentences is a challenge. A community like writingsamurai.com specializes in doing this by teaching creative writing classes online. No matter where you are in the world, you son or daughter can access their lessons anytime they want. They’ll be taught the importance of paragraphs and narrative structure so their stories and characters maintain a consistency. This helps children to understand how they can pace their stories and in turn, take time with each little thought they have.

In truth, writing is overlooked by just as important as reading. In fact, as they get older it's more important to be able to articulate and grasp their thoughts out into words. Once they have the artistic nature of creative writing understood, there’s no telling how wonderful their stories will become.
