Sugar

It isn’t easy to admit, but these days sugar is in a heck of a lot more foods than we would expect, and it can be one of the most common causes of obesity, high cholesterol and diabetes. Excessive sugar in our diets could also go on to cause other health concerns like heart disease. If you are starting to be concerned about your sugar levels in your blood then this is when contour test strips could really come in handy. However, while we may be trying to be conscious of the amount of sugar you have, such as reducing it in tea and coffee or avoiding the sweet treats, it is the foods we didn’t realise have high sugar that can cause us the most problems. Fruit like apples have natural sugars in them, which can end up causing more issues if you have to high quantity, and also things like ready made sauces and meals. Which brings me on to my next point.

Processed foods

Processed foods such as ready meals, ready made soups and sauces, just as a few examples, are actually not as good for you as you might think. You may think that you are eating a wholesome lasagna, but what you won;’t be thinking about is the level of sugar and salt that has been added for the taste. Also things like the additives to preserve the food for a longer sell by date can also be harmful to you in greater quantities. Ready meals or processed foods are convenient, and in moderation are not too bad. But if your diet revolves around them it may be time to try and think about learning to cook from scratch with healthier ingredients.

Alcohol

A little bit of alcohol isn’t so bad. But if you find that you are reaching for that drink more often than not then it could start to have a major effect on your health. Alcohol is something that can heighten mental health problems like anxiety and depression, and while it can be seen as a way to relax in an evening, it can also be a stimulant that will keep you awake at night.

Red meat

Finally, while a western diet does include red meat, too much of it can be seen as a bit of a health risk. Studies have shown that it can reduce your lifespan, and although gives you a good source of protein, other alternatives should be eaten such as chicken and fish. It also contains a whole lot of iron, which although is great for you in moderation, too much of the stuff can affect your brain and studies have shown that an increase in iron levels can cause diseases such as Alzheimer’s.
