A Career Change Could Be Just What You're Looking For

It doesn’t matter whether you are a stay at home mom, a corporate manager or a teacher, sometimes we want to change our careers to do something more fulfilling. While a career was once a lifelong journey, nowadays people strike a balance and experience a wide variety of roles within their thirty years of full time employment. Being stuck in a professional rut can be soul destroying. You need to feel challenged, valued and impactful. If your current job isn’t ticking these boxes, then it might be time to explore the option of a career change.

Entrepreneur

The most common get-out-clause for many is the need to follow a long held dream of self employment. Being free to dictate your own working hours, have the odd pajama day and spend your days following a money making dream is idyllic. If you aren’t one for procrastinating and you are a highly motivated self starter, you could turn your penchant for baking into a cake decorating business, your horticultural knowledge into a mobile florist, or your head for figures into a small financial services company. While the road of entrepreneurship does have many pitfalls to avoid, you can utilize the opportunity to make a name for yourself within your chosen field, be challenged every day and become a master of your own destiny.

Doctor

You might not have considered entering the medical profession, but if you have a love of science, your eager to help people and you want to have a real impact in your day job, then entering medical school and becoming a doctor could be the road down which to travel. While the cost is high financially when enrolling into school, the payback comes once you have qualified. You may choose to specialize in pediatrics to work with kids, you might want to look into mental health posts, or you could set up your own private practice. You will feel valued within your role, and you will experience new challenges every day. Many doctors come to the profession later on in life, with many medical schools stating that older applicants can make the best professionals because of their life experience.

Working Overseas

A change of location can often be as important as a change of career. If you fancy heading to the Far East to work for a corporate bluechip in Shanghai, or you fancy delving into the remote wilderness of Papua New Guinea to set up an eco-lodge, why not take the plunge and go for it? If you don’t have any ties or responsibilities, now might be the time to explore distant shores. Start making plans by learning the language of the destination that you’re keen to explore, head online to look at jobs boards, and see if your company would facilitate a move if they have offices worldwide.

Becoming bored in your job needn’t be a lifelong affliction. However, you do need to be proactive to get yourself out of a rut. A career change could be just what you are looking for.
